Over 150 people gathered to officially kick off the Francine for Fairfax campaign at the North Shore Community Centre in Mudjimba recently and proved the Sunshine Coast community is ready for change.
The event showcased the enthusiasm behind Francine Wiig’s bid to become an independent voice for Fairfax in the 2025 federal election. Attendees were inspired by Francine’s heartfelt speech outlining her commitment to putting people before politics and championing the issues that matter most to the community—housing, better infrastructure, climate action, and education.
“There was such a great buzz in the air,” Francine said. “It’s exciting to see our community come together, united by a shared vision for a stronger, more inclusive Fairfax. This movement is growing because people care deeply about their future, they are sick of our region missing out, and they want leadership that truly listens.”
Who is Francine Wiig?
Francine Wiig is a legal professional, small business owner, mum of twins, and dedicated community volunteer who has lived in Fairfax for nearly 20 years. A University of the Sunshine Coast graduate, she is running as a community independent to bring genuine, people-focused leadership to Fairfax.
"Small businesses are the backbone of the Sunshine Coast, driving our local economy and creating jobs. Yet, they face increasing pressures from rising costs and inadequate support. Similarly, our healthcare workers—part of the largest employer on the Coast—are overworked and under-resourced. It’s time to ensure they have the resources and support they need to succeed and look after our community."
“We constantly miss out because we’re labelled a safe seat. This region has been ignored for far too long. Despite being the fastest-growing region in Australia, according to one study, we only received 32% of what would be expected if there were a fair allocation. This must change. We can’t afford to go through another election cycle without securing the key infrastructure and services our community needs to thrive,” Ms. Wiig said.
"Where is the extended train line, public transport solutions, and road infrastructure we’ve been promised for over 30 years? Why are people sleeping in their cars? How can our young people prosper and feel hopeful about their future when things like home ownership seem so far out of reach? How will they pay their ever-rising HECS debt? Politics isn’t working for everyday people anymore. Major parties have forgotten to look after the people that elected them, leaving families struggling to find housing and afford necessities like groceries. There have been so many broken promises."
“As an Independent, I will play a critical role in ensuring integrity and delivering for our people. I will hold the major parties accountable and give a voice to everyday Australians who are being overlooked in favour of party politics."
“The major parties have failed to deliver for Fairfax. It’s time for a fair go for Fairfax and leadership that listens, cares, and fights for the community,” Francine said.
