About the Fairfax Electorate
The Fairfax electorate sits at the heart of the Sunshine Coast, one of the fastest-growing and most diverse regions in Australia. Stretching from the hinterland to the coast, Fairfax is home to a mix of bustling urban centres, relaxed beachside communities, magnificent rainforests and rural hinterland towns, each with its own unique character. In the 2022 federal election, there were 123,413 registered voters in Fairfax.
Key towns and suburbs include Nambour, Maroochydore, Buderim, Coolum, Bli Bli, Yandina, Eumundi, and Peregian Springs—ranging from vibrant coastal hubs to historic rural villages. Further inland, the farming communities of Kenilworth and the Mary Valley are known for their dairy farming, local produce, and strong agricultural heritage, surrounded by stunning national parks like Conondale National Park and Mapleton National Park, which are vital for biodiversity and eco-tourism.
The Fairfax electorate is named after Ruth Fairfax, founder of the Country Women’s Association.
However Fairfax has never been represented by a woman.
Fairfax is known for its stunning natural heritage, from the pristine beaches of the coastline to the lush hinterland of the Blackall Range. National parks, including Mapleton National Park and Mount Coolum, are cherished for their biodiversity and recreational value. The region also boasts rich agricultural land, producing everything from fresh local produce to world-renowned craft products.
As a regional powerhouse, Fairfax has a thriving economy driven by tourism, retail, healthcare, construction, education, and a growing technology and innovation sector. The Sunshine Coast University Hospital and the local university campus contribute to a strong health and education presence, while a surge in infrastructure and business investment is shaping the future of the region.
However, rapid growth also brings challenges. As one of Queensland’s most desirable places to live, housing affordability, transport, and infrastructure pressures are key concerns. Ensuring that Fairfax gets the investment and representation it deserves is crucial for a sustainable, thriving future.
